Winter Heavens
George Meredith (1888)
Sharp is the night, but stars with frost alive
Leap off the rim of earth across the dome.
It is a night to make the heavens our home
More than the nest where to apace we strive.
Lengths down our road each fir-tree seems a hive,
In swarms outrushing from the golden comb.
They waken waves of thoughts that burst to foam:
The living throb in me, the dead revive.
Your mantle clothes us: there, past mortal breath,
Life glistens on the river of the death.
It folds us, flesh and dust; and have we knelt,
Or never knelt, or eyed as kine the springs
Of radiance, the radiance enrings:
And this is the soul’s haven to have felt.
Beautiful photos and words Mitza. Very evocative words!!! 🙂

Thanks a lot, dear Agnes. I am looking a lot for good English poems and wanted to have one by Rainer Maria Rilke but didn’t find one for winter, so I took this one, because I liked it, too. I’m happy you enjoyed my photos, too. Kind regards Mitza

One needs to read the poem several times before its full meaning penetrates our sluggish minds. Your pictures are well chosen and signal in conjunction with the poetic lines that life and death are just two sides of the same coin. Thank you, Mitza, for rising above the current chit-chat of ephemeral trivia! Also your comment on my late brother-in-law’s views on the US was very much appreciated.

thanks a lot, Peter. I really take a lot of dilligence to do my blog and a good poem can transfer feelings and moods. Photos can do the same and it’s completely right, that life and death belong together. I always have to remind myself all the time about it. And last but not least, I like to transfer some quality, I wouldn’t like to blog my fingernails, if you get what I mean… 🙂

What a beautiful post Mitza! Life is a beautiful circle which never stops, things come and go, they die and getting reborn again. Your images reflect beautifully the poem, the universe works seamlessly, perfectly, endlessly regardless of our existence and winter is a part of that cycle.
Even do nature seems to be fragile at such times nevertheless it is most resilient and will survive under the snow blanket to complete the cycle.
The circle of life is a circle for a reason.
Absolute marvelous shots, so delicate, so fragile and beautifully sensitive!
Snow has a noble purpose (everything in nature has a purpose) of protecting and that is what it does.
This post is my very favorite this year, so beautiful it took my breath away!
Thank you for sharing the wonderful beauty of winter!

thank you so much, dear Eva, for your wonderful words. (I nearly blushed) Your words are very philosophical and completely right. Winter is some sort of a break for nature to collect some new strength for the new period. I always disliked winter so much, but this year I finally found the beauty in it and was very happy about it. What is more beautiful than the frosty rime on intricate birch brances against a dark blue winter sky? And I didn’t have my camera with me, sigh. I like to share beautiful things with the world/you because you do the same with your wonderful shoes. Virtual hugs Mitza

You’re most kind my dear friend with your words. Winter is necessary in some places and I’m glad that you found the beauty in it, your post proves that totally! Under the snow blanket beautiful things hide and sleep till it’s time to show themselves once again.
Nature is a seamless flow of wonders! Hugs~Eva

I used to call snow “the witch’s veil” that covers the earth with mesmerization. Our first snowdrops are coming up, the birds sometimes sing as if they feel spring in their veins. Hugs Mitza

awesome!! gorgeous photos of the snow ! love the poem. I find the older poets of that era, somehow sharper and deeper. I’ve always enjoyed that era more. Thanks for sharing both the poem, and your fab fotos!

thanks a lot, dear Debi. It took some time to find a suitable poem. First I wanted one from Rainer Maria Rilke but couldn’t find one for winter, so I found this one and liked it a lot. They fit together, the poem and the photos.

Oh my goodness Mitza! I LOVE this poem which affected me on a very deep level. I will have to find more of his work. And the photos are a little glimpse into your snowy world and really show the exquisite and slow decay which Winter creates until Spring arrives and new growth appears . Beautiful, Mitza x

Thank you, dear Karen. I was actually looking for a poem from Rilke for you, but couldn’t find an English one. Translating Rilke is too hard for me. some people might forget that English isn’t my mother tongue but I take a lot of efforts and time to translate things or to find beautiful poems. I was really sure that you would love it and I’m very happy about it. To find beauty, mood and feeling in a poem is something wonderful. Have a nice day. Next week I have more time to make photos for you. Virtual hugs to you and Josef.
