Painting and drawing

I started drawing when I was still in the play pen. I used lead pencils in the first years. In the beginning I used to draw a lot of people, my aunt, my mother etc. After a while I was allowed to paint with my grandfather’s oil colors as he was painting (great daubs), too. I didn’t know how to temper colors at first. When I wanted to paint a tree I just took some green etc. I was somehow struggling with colors. I was more an illustrator than a painter and still am. I have tried various times to make abstract paintings but it doens’t work for me.

When I finally studied arts for 4 years I was introduced to draw fromย still lifes or from photos, which is perfect for me as I need a lot of time to finish my illustrations. Sometimes it even takes months to finish them.

I’m collecting so many little old things just in order to paint or draw them and sometimes I find things in our garden or in nature which are worth drawing. For some of my illustrations I used a graphite pencil, colored pencils and some opaque white for the highlights. The other paintings have been made with acquarel color and acrylics. I’m collecting old frames (believe it or not, I have 180 frames in my flat!) and sometimes they don’t have a picture inside. Then I make it. But usually I prefer old copper engravings of flowers or old towns.

The acquarel in the black frame shows Kefalonia in springtime when the poppies were blooming, the black long rectangular frame shows my field in Greece and the rest are things I found in our garden or in nature.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Judy. I think quilting and sewing is a talent, too. I don’t know how to quilt, but I’m sewing sometimes curtains or even bedcloths. Regarding my frames I must admit that I don’t store them, they are all hung up in my rooms. It’s a very nice collection and maybe I will post some photos sometime. Have a nice day, regards Mitza

    • I’m sorry, but your comment was hidden somewhere. I think quilting and sewing is quite a difficult work. I have tried quilting but you have to be so exact in sewing that I start sueing, hehe. Regarding my frames: I don’t store them, I hang them up, which means about 60 frames per room. Maybe sounds crazy but looks good because I collect with a lot of taste. Maybe I will post it sometime. Have a nice day, Judy, regards Mitza

  1. Dear Mitza, 180 frames would be motivation to fill them all but a bit of pressure too! Just as well you are so talented. Your work is meticulous so they must have taken time to complete. I agree with your choice of the faded bloom as the header image. Such nostalgia yet a celebration of a faded beauty.

  2. Oh, Mitza, you should have posted this stuff long ago! You are very talented and gifted! ๐Ÿ™‚
I am very appreciative of E.E.Cummings’ art and the art of M.C.Escher; i even have some originals. Cummings was into Cubism at first but later gravitated to more natural, life-like art (though his art went far beyond that). He did a good number of still-lifes too. (See some of his art at eecummingsart.com)
Keep posting your art now and then! Awesome!

    • Thank you, dear Alex. I love to think about compositions a lot, even when I do my jewellery, because that’s the most important to make beautiful things. You probably know that now. Kind regards Mitza

    • Thank you so much, dear Debi. I’m some sort of super-aesthete. You would laugh if you would see my flat with the 180 frames. I wish I could post a painting every week, but I don’t know where to steal the time I need for bicycling, sigh

      • Oh, we have 27 degrees C. (hehe that’s an April joke) Today in the morning 1 degree C, the windows of the car frozen! and I had to go for a bicycle repair. I was freezing, brrrr, but our garden shows a lot of wonderful flowers. We have about 60 different helebores, a lot of narcissus etc. It will become warmer this weekend, fortunately.
I know how hard it is to maintain all my hobbies beside bicycling 10 km every day, shopping, cooking, cleaning etc. But whenever I have a minute I at least think about future projects. Cheers, Mitza

      • 1c good grief! hope it warmed up later. the helebores are one of my favs, so delicate and pretty…… I’m sure you’ll be showing them!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ And, definitely, THINKING – Counts as ‘working on the process’ – don’t you think!

      • I didn’t know that helebores were your favs. I think, we have about 60 different ones, 3 filled ones and many colors from white to green, from pink to aubergine color with spots, round or pointed petals etc. I have shown them last year already and don’t want to bore people but maybe I find some new ones.
I usually think about making jewellery etc. when I want to sleep. That calms me down and lets me forget all the noise in our house. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  4. An interesting gallery of your work Mitza, delighted to see it all. So you collect old frames also! I’ve got quite a bit of a collection too and have put all sort of favourite photos or reproductions of favourite paintings in them. My collection of my own work is in a box and has not been looked at for a long while but recently I felt that I wanted to draw again, Gozo inspired me ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m enjoying your blog very much indeed, thank you.
